Mac Allister: Liverpool’s win over Real means nothing

Alexis Mac Allister says Liverpool’s victory over Real Madrid in the UEFA Champions League “means nothing” after being knocked out in the round of 16 last season.

The Argentine midfielder scored the only goal of the match to give the Reds a huge victory over Xabi Alonso’s side at Anfield on Tuesday evening.

The result moves Liverpool up to sixth in the league, level with Real on nine points, and puts recent poor form firmly behind them.

Mac Allister: Liverpool victory over Real Madrid ‘means nothing’

Mac Allister, who was named Player of the Match at the final whistle, recalled how the Merseyside team topped the table last year but were knocked out by PSG on penalties in the first round of the knockout stages.

“I think it was a good game against a very good team,” he told Amazon Prime. A victory, but we know it means nothing. Due to the experience of last season we finished first and then we were eliminated quite early.”

It looked to be another frustrating evening for Liverpool against Thibaut Courtois, who put in a performance reminiscent of the 2022 Champions League final. The Belgian made eight saves on this occasion, although he could not keep out Mac Allister’s decisive effort on the hour mark.

“He’s a fantastic goalkeeper, we all know that,” said Mac Allister. “He had a few saves, so again I think he is a very good goalkeeper, but today I think we were better and deserved the win.”

The goal will be a huge confidence boost for the 26-year-old, who has endured a difficult few months on the pitch. When asked what it could mean for his season, he replied: “I always try to think about the team, not about me.

“It’s true that this wasn’t the start to the campaign that I wanted. It was a bit difficult for me, but now I’m starting to get into the rhythm. I just wanted to play a few games in a row, so I’m happy that today I got the chance to play against Aston Villa and Real Madrid. I’m very happy with it.”
