A year ago, a teenage sensation from India announced herself on the big stage, causing the tennis world to take notice with a stunning run to the semi-finals of the 2025 WTA 125 Mumbai Open. Then, 15-year-old Maaya Rajeshwaran bowed to Switzerland’s Jil Teichmann, who went on to take the title.

As the fifth edition of the WTA 125K Series L&T Mumbai Open gets underway at the Maharashtra State Lawn Tennis Association (MSLTA) on Monday, Maaya is back – bolder, stronger and determined to go further.

Speaking ahead of the main tournament, the young Indian expressed her excitement about returning to Mumbai and gaining experience at the highest level.

“I just want to play as many big tournaments as possible this year. It’s about getting more match time and building up the strength to play for longer periods of time on the road,” Maaya said.

“It’s a privilege and an honor to play against such high-level athletes. For me, now it’s about playing more, gaining experience and appearing on the field in the best way possible,” she added.

The tournament also features a strong international field, with eight players in the main draw ranked in the WTA top 150.

Indian players are also expected to take center stage, with the likes of Sahaja Yamalapalli, Shrivalli Bhamidipati, Vaidehi Chaudhari and Vaishnavi Adkar coming through wildcard entries, adding further intrigue to what promises to be a high-quality week of tennis in Mumbai.
