Luton Town currently sit a disappointing 11th in League One. LTFC have only managed 16 points from their first eleven games.

A run of just one win in the last five games has increased the pressure for improvement. As a result, the club decided to part ways earlier this week Matt Bloomfield.

Bloomfield failed to lead the Hatters to safety last season. With another poor start to the 2025/2026 season, the call for change in the dugout has only become louder.

Attention is now focused on finding his successor. Reports had emerged that LTFC had a three-man shortlist consisting of Leyton Orient’s Richie Wellens, Jack Wilshere and Luke Williams.

Now Jack Wilshere is emerging as the man likely to take over, as reported by Football insider. They have claimed Wilshere is close to closing a deal to take over Kenilworth Road.

The LTFC post would be Wilshere’s first regular role in senior football. He was under-18 boss at Arsenal before joining Johannes Hoff Thorup’s coaching staff at Norwich City last season.

Wilshere is ready for a first-team role

Just over three years after an injury prematurely ended his playing career, Jack Wilshere made the transition to coaching.

His return to Arsenal as U18s boss has produced some encouraging results, showing his ability to develop young talent. During that time he was also able to learn from a number of experienced high level coaches at the club.

The Luton Town managerial candidate also gained valuable experience during his time at Norwich City. Working as Thorup’s assistant helped him continue his coaching education, while his short stint as a caretaker manager gave him a first taste of leading a senior team.

Reports from the period suggested that his work on the training ground was well received, which reflected positively on his credentials as he faced his first permanent managerial role, despite his relative inexperience.

Can Wilshere handle this task?

Just eighteen months ago, Luton Town fans were watching Premier League football at Kenilworth Road. Now the club finds itself in the middle of League One without a manager, underperforming and in desperate need of direction.

Recent displays have lacked conviction, with several players failing to live up to the standards their pedigree suggests. If Luton are to return to their former heights, improvement must come quickly.

Appointing a newcomer like Wilshere would be a risky gamble at such a crucial stage. If the deal is as close as reported, his first game will be at home to Mansfield Town.
