Glenn Thornton knows Run Lucy Run has capabilities, but getting her to perform at those levels is a matter of patience, which he hopes will pay off.
The former Victorian trainer who now calls the Gold Coast home is building his 12-strong team into shape for 2026 and Run Lucy Run is looking to follow up on her last start win at Ipswich in the Gordon’s Gin Class 4 Handicap (1350m) on Friday.
The four-year-old mare won the same course and distance on January 31 and an expected well-judged surface should be in her favour.
That win broke a streak of outs dating back to December 2024.
“She has done very well since then and there is no reason why she shouldn’t do well again,” Thornton said.
“She usually improves through her preparations and does not deteriorate.
“If we couldn’t win last time, we were in trouble.
Early betting had her at $3.40 on the markets, but that has been cut to $2.50 after the removal of early favorite Noble Decree on Thursday afternoon.
Two other scratchers had her original barrier 11 draw come in at gate eight.
“She has performed in better class races than this,” Thornton added.
“As she gets closer to where she was as a three-year-old, she will run well.
Thornton moved to Queensland five years ago and followed his three children – Damien who rides Run Lucy Run, Boris and Stephanie – to the Sunshine State and he hasn’t looked back.
He hopes Run Lucy Run will find its way back into the metro racing class, but is happy to see another win at Ipswich in the meantime.
“We were happy to go back to Ipswich knowing it was a good surface and unless it rains that day they usually offer a reliable track.”
