West Ham United manager Nuno Espirito Santo says Lucas Paqueta is “suffering”, “disappointed and upset” after being sent off against Liverpool last weekend.

The midfielder received two bookings in quick succession for dissent from referee Darren England, before saying on social media that he continues to be punished and hit with charges of spot-fixing offences, for which he was found not guilty by an independent regulatory commission.

“It’s ridiculous to let your life and career be affected for two years without any psychological support from the federation,” Paqueta wrote on X.

“Maybe this ridiculous behavior is just a reflection of everything I’ve had to endure and, it seems, have to continue to endure! I’m sorry if I’m not perfect.”

The Brazilian will miss Wednesday’s match against Manchester United at Old Trafford due to a one-match suspension.

Nuno revealed that Paqueta apologized for his tantrum and said he will receive help from West Ham following the incident and his statement. He added that the player will be back in the team for the trip to Brighton this weekend.

“I spoke to Lucas, and he spoke not only to me, but to all his teammates,” he said at his pre-match press conference on Tuesday.

“First of all, he has apologized. He is aware of his mistake. But we as a club first and foremost protect our own and resolve matters among ourselves.”

“It was clear that everyone understood that in life everyone is aware that mistakes can happen on the football field.

“Sometimes the emotions can be out of control, but at the same time everyone has a chance [to make up for it].

“So we move on. Lucas will be out of the Man Utd game but he will be involved in the next one.”

Nuno continued: “Things are not going well for him. He is suffering. He is disappointed and angry. But he realizes the mistake he has made and he is ready to move on. This is what people are sometimes not aware of about the problems that footballers go through. But Lucas I think he will overcome this situation.”

“I think so [the investigation] affects him, but he is willing to move on, try to put this aside and keep playing football the way he does.

“What I can assure you is that we have all the support here at the club that the players need. We have processes in place in the club that help and we are prepared to provide assistance here in the club.”
