LRL: Phlying Phyllis wants to extend the series in the Sunday match

On the Mark returns running; Hazlewood range on 21

Phlying Phyllis will try to keep her career-opening streak intact in Sunday’s Laurel Park feature, a $49,000 first-level allowance for older fillies and mares going seven furlongs.

The second-year Coal Front filly, trained by Gary Capuano for Rose Petal Stable LLC, has placed first or second in all four starts in her career and was most recently the winner of a close starter’s fee at Delaware Park on Oct. 1.

All that assuming there is racing going on. With snow and rain in the forecast, the chatter on the track focuses on whether that will happen.

If conditions cooperate, Phlying Phyllis appears well positioned to make the jump to the open N1X company. She has already proven effective on both fast and wet terrain, and her recent win in Delaware showcased her ability to stay just off the pace before carving her way past rivals on the track. Capuano has been particularly effective with winning horses and general runners, and the filly has five-pound apprentice Yedsit Hazlewood with him.

Phylying Phyllis is 4-1 on the morning line.

Greek heiress is the 5-2 favorite in the morning line. She is a six-time winner with early speed that is prominent from the start. She participates in a few off-color outings, but has plenty of strong performances on the page.

Claimed earlier this fall by Lacey Gaudet, the Kantharos mare possesses a back class that outpaces most of the field and has been competitive in tough spots at Churchill Downs and Ellis Park. If she gets an early release under Forest Boyce, it could prove difficult to land her.

Others with potential include Love You More (3-1), who finally broke through at Laurel’s Last Out and is now trying winners for Horacio De Paz, and Vanilla Sundae (9-2), a Gun Runner filly from Brittany Russell’s barn whose back racing when in Todd Pletcher’s barn signals a push back in distance.

Old Bay (8-1) brings consistency and local experience, while Shine On Moon (9-2) returns to the field after doing most of its best work on grass.

The compensation feature is the seventh race in an eight-race program. Posting time for the card is 12:00 noon.

SATURDAY RACING NOTES Heavy favorite Cattivo Ragazzo broke through the gate and got away shortly before Saturday’s seventh race, a second level allowance/optional claimer. After being collected and returned to the gate, he finished third, while On the Mark ($4.60), with Tais Lyapustina in the lead, won for owner-trainer Joanne Shankle. It was the first start of On the Mark after a five-month refresh. “He was ready,” Shankle said. “He runs fast every time. He tries.”

Shankle also won the third race with On a Proud Note ($4.60). JG Torrealba was in the irons…

Fear Nothing ($11.20) took the fifth race for owner-trainer Hamilton Smith, while bug rider Yedsit Hazlewood took the sixth race. It marked Hazlewood’s 21st consecutive day of racing at Laurel Park with at least one win…
