With dizzying speed from pole, Loyal Lou managed to hold the lead ahead of driver Seaton Grima and as the field changed positions behind the leader, Heidsieck was forced to race outside the leader.
The faithful Lou rode well within himself and Grima had him running his second and third quarters in 28.5 and 27.9 seconds, breaking up the field and seeing him head home with a lead of more than 25 metres.
The three-year-old gelding rode to the line just under 15 meters from Heidsieck, who refused to give up second and Bettorlightemup took third. By winning, Loyal Lou compensated for his heat loss in protest the week before.
FAITHFUL LOU REPLAY
The victory capped a big night for Grima, who had previously won the Maitland Cup with Itzmineontheline.
Loyal Lou was bred to be a prolific winner. Although his mother Loyal Arden (Art Major) only has four pacers on the track, they have all impressed.
Bred by Invercargill hobby breeder Steve Baucke and neighbor David Sutherland Loyal Arden was purchased as a three-year-old for a modest $2,500 at a mixed sale in Auckland in 2014.
The first of Loyal Arden’s descendants Loyalist who had finished second in the Maitland Cup earlier in the evening and has won 14 races with a fastest time of 1.49.8. after that, his brother Mr Perfect has won 15 races, while younger half-sister Go Oh Micky won 11 races.
Loyal Arden was a half-sister of millionaire pacer and NZ Cup and AG Hunter Cup winner Arden Rooney and New Zealand, New South Wales and American winner Arden Messi.
Although he still has quite a way to go before he reaches his illustrious half-brother record, Loyal Lou gives every indication that he could be the best of the bunch yet.
