The Meteorological Department on Wednesday said the well-marked low-pressure area over the southwestern Bay of Bengal, off northern Sri Lanka, has shifted northwestward and is likely to deepen into a depression on October 22.

The Met Department noted that the weather system was over the southwestern Bay of Bengal off the Tamil Nadu coast at 5.30 am on Wednesday.

“As it moves towards the northwest, there is a possibility that it (weather system) may intensify into a depression over the southwest and adjoining west-central Bay of Bengal, off northern Tamil Nadu and southern Andhra Pradesh, over the next 12 hours,” the Met department said in a press release.

It is then likely to move along the coasts of North Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and South Andhra Pradesh in the next twelve hours.

Under the influence of the well-marked low-pressure area, the Met Department observed, extremely heavy rainfall is likely to occur at isolated places in Nellore, Prakasam, Tirupati, Annamayya, Chittoor and Kadapa districts.

It also predicted heavy to very heavy rainfall in Sri Sathyasai, Anantapur, Nandyal, Kurnool and Bapatla districts.

The Met department has issued red alert for Prakasam, Nellore, Kadapa, Annamayya, Tirupati and Chittoor districts and orange alert for Kurnool, Nandyal, Anantapur and Sri Satyasai districts.

Red alert indicates ‘heavy to extremely heavy’ rainfall of more than 20 cm in 24 hours. An orange warning indicates ‘very heavy’ rainfall of 11 to 20 cm.

Meanwhile, Minister Vangalapudi Anitha discussed the situation with Andhra Pradesh State Disaster Management Authority (APSDMA) officials.

“Unless necessary, people should avoid travel as gale force winds are likely,” Anitha said in a press release. She advised people to stay in safe buildings. She directed the police, NDRF, SDRF and fire brigade to be ready for rescue operations and called on the district control rooms to be alert.

Finance Minister A Satya Prasad alerted officials and directed them to shift people living in low-lying areas to safer places.

He instructed officials to ensure that fishermen do not enter the sea to fish. Meanwhile, Andhra Pradesh State Disaster Management Authority (APSDMA) director Prakhar Jain warned people against taking shelter under trees and large hoardings.

“People living in low-lying areas should take precautions. Try not to cross flooded roads and streams,” Jain said in an official release.
