Organizers of the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles on Tuesday named six stadiums across the United States that will host matches in the men’s and women’s Olympic soccer tournaments, expanding the competitive footprint far beyond Southern California.
LA28 said group stage and knockout matches will be played in New York, Columbus, Nashville, St. Louis, San Jose and San Diego.
The stadiums themselves are all home to Major League Soccer teams. They include the under-construction Etihad Park in Queens, New York, which will be completed in 2027 and will become a Major League Soccer venue: Scott’s Miracle-Gro Field in Columbus, Geodis Park in Nashville, Energizer Park in St. Louis, PayPal Park in San Jose, and Snapdragon Stadium in San Diego.
Snapdragon Stadium is the largest of the group, with a capacity of 35,000. PayPal Park is the smallest at 18,000. The final stage matches, including the men’s and women’s gold medal matches, have already been confirmed for the Rose Bowl in Pasadena. The men’s final is scheduled for July 28, 2028, followed by the women’s final on July 29, organizers said.
LA28 said it has designed the tournament schedule to simultaneously host matches from the East Coast to the West Coast in an effort to limit travel and support athlete well-being while providing fans with a more geographically inclusive gaming experience.
Organizers also highlighted a milestone in Olympic football, pointing out that for the first time there will be more women’s teams (16) than men’s teams (12) competing. LA28 said it wants to set a benchmark for the first Olympic Games, which will include at least as many women’s teams as men’s teams in all team sports.
A full match schedule for both tournaments, including dates and locations for each match, will be announced before tickets go on sale in April, LA28 said.
