Lorenzo Musetti scored a double-clinching semi-final victory at the Bank of China Hong Kong Tennis Open on Saturday, where he also sealed his breakthrough into the Top 5.

The top-seeded Italian produced a gritty performance to beat former champion Andrey Rublev 6-7(3), 7-5, 6-4 to reach his ninth ATP Tour final. Musetti, who is chasing his first title since winning two in 2022, has jumped to career No. 5 in the PIF ATP Live Rankings and secured a place in the Top 5 on Monday.

“It was quite a match, I don’t think I’ve ever played like that here in Hong Kong,” said Musetti, who leveled his Lexus ATP Head2Head series with Rublev at 1-1. “It was really an incredible level. Every time I raised his level, and eventually I went up.” [mine]. So I’m very happy to be in the final.”

Alexander Bublik later ensured it would be a championship match between the top two seeds in Hong Kong when he rallied for 3-6, 6-4, 6-2 over American Marcos Giron. If the Kazakhstani can beat Musetti, he will rise one spot to career No. 10 in the world rankings on Monday.

A crucial moment in his semi-final against Rublev came when Musetti served at 3-4 in the second set. According to Infosys ATP Stats, he crucially saved two break points in a lengthy service hold with six Deuces, staying in contention and eventually turning the match in his favor late in the third.

Musetti, the debutant of last year’s Nitto ATP Finals, becomes the third Italian in the history of the PIF ATP Rankings to be in the Top 5, after Adriano Panatta (1976) and Jannik Sinner (2024).

Bublik had to work in his one-hour and 41-minute semi-final victory over Giron, but can now look forward to a 16th ATP Tour final. He leads Musetti 2-1 in their Lexus ATP Head2Head series, but the pair have not met since 2024.

“It will be a tough final,” said Bublik. “Lorenzo just came out of the Nitto ATP Finals, he’s had a great season. It’s going to be a great match, I just hope for a good fight.”
