Lorenzo Ghiberti, the Porta del Paradiso Lorenzo Ghiberti, La Porta del Paradiso, 1425-52

NEL 1425, after completion The Oost Side of the Baptismal Chapel of FlorenceDe Goudsmid, sculptor and architect Lorenzo Ghiberti The construction of the Noord -Porta started. This work took place in the field of marketing committee or a large company of wool traders. The east door was made with 28 tiles that reproduced scenes from the New Testament. For this new work, however, the subject had to relate to the Old Testament. Ghiberti decided to make only 10 tiles, the larger dimensions, which could have housed extra narrative elements. The groups of figures were performed at different levels of importance, long and low, creating strong three -dimensional images.

To make this effect more realistic, Ghiberti resorted to the perspective lines, as a result of which the figures in the foreground at the top and gradually broken down the scenes that were broken down into the background. Although most reliefs had already been performed in 1436, the subsequent cleaning and rejection of the profiles was occupied for the next 10 years and the Golden Brown was not completed until June 1450. During this period, the Ghiberti workshop became one of the most famous in Europe. Given the wonderful result, the art of marketing replaced the bronze gate to the east, always made by Ghiberti, with the new, the previous one in the north. The entrance was called Porta del Paradiso, as it was from here that it was accessible to the baptismal chapel to be baptized.

The high and low relief

The frame around the doors of the door contains some portraits in Busto in circular tiles. One of these reproduces Lorenzo Ghiberti himself. The circular tiles are interspersed with niches that contain subjects of the Old Testament and Sibille heads. The Ghiberti used the high and low lighting to distinguish three episodes of Joseph’s life in the fork dedicated to this specific episode. In the corner on the right, Giuseppe is thrown by the brothers in the well. In the middle he distributes the wheat to a large crowd, while at the top left reveals his identity and forgives the brothers. The arrival of the queen of Saba is depicted for a large porch, a kind of composition that anticipates the school of Athens of Raffaello. Ghiberti increases the feeling of depth by reproducing a majestic architecture through different perspective art. In 1990 the panels were replaced by loyal copies and exhibited in the Museum of the Opera del Duomo.
