Saturday $ 2 million, Grade 1 Ainsworth Franklin-Simpson Stakes in Kentucky Downs takes place at the unusual distance of 6 1/2 Furlongs (13/16th of a mile) on turf. It is longer than typical peat sprints, but considerably shorter than a mile.
The distance can be unsuitable for a few otherwise formidable contenders. #4 dream up Has excited a mile, winning the grade 3 Penn Mile Stakes and finished third in the grade 1 Bet365 Summer Stakes last September. But he lost his only earlier start that sprinted 6 1/2 Furlongs, so cutting back in distance is a question mark.
#7 Governor Sam is confronted with the opposite obstacle. The Speedy Colt has won the Grade 3 Quick Call Stakes presented by Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation, Indian Summer Stakes presented by Keeneland Select, Exacta Systems Rosie’s Stakes and Tyro Stakes Sprinting 5 1/2 Furlongs or less. But he has never tried longer distances, and his former versions suggest that racing 6 1/2 furlongs can extend the limits of his endurance.
Juddmonte HomeBred, on the other hand #8 seasoned Looks like a great fit for 6 1/2 Furlongs and the emerging foal is my best choice.
Spiced Up made his grass debut in a first special weight race to sprint six Furlongs at Aqueduct. After assessing a few lengths behind fast fractions of: 21.51 and: 43.85, he clearly carried out to win with 2 3/4 lengths in 1: 07.43, giving him the impression that he had enjoyed more land.
That impression was repeated when Spiced Up performed in the classroom for the grade 3 Mahony Stakes that sprint 5 1/2 Furlongs in Saratoga last month. After falling no less than 7 1/2 lengths behind intense splits of: 21.15 and: 43.71, seasoned up on the ground to beat the Governor Sam with 1 1/4 lengths in 1: 01.22.
Spiced Up will get more ground to work with in the Franklin-Simpson, so he gets every chance to bring his peat record to a perfect 3-out-3.
Depending on your bet budget, we recommend betting seasoned to win and perhaps play him on top of an Exact van Dream on, Governor Sam, and #11 on bail For second place.
Versatility has shown on bail from the distance of distance. He finished second with Governor Sam in the use of Rosie and the Indian summer use that 5 1/2 Furlongs sprint and second to dream in the Andermlian Penn Mijl. Perhaps 6 1/2 Furlongs is the Sweet Spot for bail.
