The fatigue of the driver is a hidden threat, especially when it comes to those who control commercial vehicles, with long hours behind the wheel that is reinforced the risk of an accident. In an attempt to tackle this, the Ministry of Transport says that it is investigating the possibility of using digital technology to check the fatigue levels of public service factors, Declared Reports.
According to deputy Minister of Transport that Hasbi Habibollah is holding the ministry involvement in stakeholders in the land transport industry to investigate the technology of the digital monitoring of the system for detecting fatigue of the driver and the health level, in particular in relation to sleep disorders or sleep apnea.
He said that these discussions have involved industrial operators, innovators and logistics companies in both heavy and light transport sectors. “We are aware of problems with sleep apnea in the past. The costs (the digital monitoring) were once increased, but it would cost hundreds of ringgit per check.”
“With a new memorandum of agreement (MOA), however, we will look understandably,” he said during a question and answer session in the Dewan Negara. He said this in response to an additional question from Senator that Koh Nai Kwong, who asked whether the government considered the use of portable technology to control the fatigue levels of PSV drivers.

The MOA in question was signed in May between the Malaysian Institute for Road Safety Research (Miros) and Alpha International Training and Consultancy to develop specialized training programs to tackle its lack of sleep and its impact on road safety. This includes a certification and rehabilitation program for sleep management, which aims to increase consciousness and to equip commercial factors with skills for fatigue management.
Hasbi added that the ministry is also looking for proposals to use advanced technologies such as driver recognition systems with the steering wheel of the vehicle, which can detect the heart rate when it is kept.
He said that this innovation could prevent unhealthy drivers from starting their travels by following vital signs at contact. “We take note of this of this issue in addition to the MOA that have been made with the industry on sleep apnea, and will formulate the outcome and determine the next road,” he said.
