The East-West Highway, in particular with the Gerik-Jeli-Stretch, is one of the most important priorities for the Ministry of Working under the upcoming budget 2026 that will be submitted later this year, the Minister of Worksuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi said, reported, reported Declared.
The Ministry of Works had submitted a request for financing to upgrade different sections of the route, Nanta said, referring to urgent safety needs. However, the exact allocation depends on the final decision of the government, according to the report.
“It is not a special allocation. We have included it under regular financing requests for the highway,” said the Minister of Works. A total of 385 street lamps on solar energy were installed in risky areas and dangerous bends-all-generally known as black spots-langs the East-West highway as part of continuous security measures, he said.
These upgrades will not be for the entire highway, but only for critical sections identified by reviews by the Works Ministry, Nanta added.
The part of the East-West highway near Gerik was recently put into the spotlight when a bus crash claimed the lives of 15 students. A preliminary report that emerged last month showed that the bus reached 117.6 km/h, and excessive speed included factors in the incident.
