Longstaff hails ‘gigantic’ Leeds teammate after ‘difficult time’

Sean Longstaff has praised Leeds teammate Lucas Perri for his role in the club’s FA Cup victory over Birmingham City.

Leeds progressed to the fifth round of the FA Cup with a penalty shootout win at St Andrews, after a 1–1 draw. Birmingham had forced penalties following Patrick Roberts’ late equalizer after Lukas Nmecha had given Leeds the lead.

In the shootout, Longstaff converted the decisive kick after Perri saved from Tommy Doyle and Roberts fired his penalty over the bar.

Longstaff had praise for Leeds goalkeeper Perri, who lost his place in the team to Karl Darlow in recent weeks.

Asked if he was nervous taking the decisive kick, Longstaff told TNT Sports: “I think it’s easier to know that if you miss there will be more penalties. But I thought Lucas [Perri] was huge today, obviously in the shootout, but in the game, especially in the first half.

“We got a result. It’s never pretty in the FA Cup but we’re happy to get through it.”

“I think anytime you’re signed by a team in a lower division, a lot of people expect you to bounce back and win, but that’s never the case. I thought they were excellent today.”

“At the end of the day it comes down to the moments and we were better today in the bigger moments and I’m really happy for Lucas because it hasn’t exactly been a difficult time for him but he deserves it today. I’m really happy for him.”
