Coventry City loan player Carl Rushworth is not considering a permanent move to the Sky Blues, but acknowledges that the club meets many requirements.
Coventry City are flying high at the top of the Championship after an electric start to the season.
The Sky Blues are still unbeaten with six straight wins to their name after Saturday’s victory over Watford. And although Carl Rushworth failed to keep his seventh clean sheet of the campaign, it was another fine performance from the on-loan goalkeeper.
Although protected by an impressive back line, Rushworth has impressed with his shot-stopping and a host of eye-catching saves. It inevitably means that questions have been raised about a permanent home at the CBS Arena.
Rushworth said he remains focused on helping Coventry City achieve their campaign objectives. But he cannot ignore that the club has a lot in store for him.
As quoted by Coventry Livesaid the 24-year-old when asked if he could see himself staying:
‘Yes, I could.
“I really like it and I just want to say that I really enjoy it here. The group is really good, I like the location and the club is also going in the right direction for me.”
“There’s a fan base, so there’s a lot of things that meet the demands, so yeah, I’m really enjoying my time at the moment.”
Could Coventry City sign Carl Rushworth permanently in 2026?
Coventry City have not been afraid to spend money in recent seasons. The 2025 summer transfer window was slightly quieter by recent standards, with Frank Lampard placing faith in much of his existing group.
When signing loans, it is often the case that a final deal afterwards is not excluded. That certainly seems to be the case with Rushworth, given his place in Brighton’s pecking order.
Although the Seagulls are a promising player, they are already well prepared for the future with Bart Verbruggen. It means Rushworth may have to move elsewhere to secure a permanent spot.
In the midst of such a loan boom, it’s hard not to see a world where Coventry City is that place for him.

Coventry City would face the Oliver Dovin dilemma with the Rushworth deal
Rushworth’s form means few would complain about his permanent signing, if anyone. However, they would have a dilemma to navigate.
Coventry City signed Oliver Dovin in 2024 as the number one long-term option, after Ben Wilson and Brad Collins battled for the spot for long periods. However, he was ruled out long-term with one ACL injury earlier this year.
Dovin himself is a solid young goalkeeper, so having both him and Rushworth isn’t optimal. Yes, it’s ideal to have two solid goalkeepers who can compete for the spot, but with both needing minutes to develop, one will be unhappy with a spot on the bench.
If push comes to shove, City may have to decide to stick with Dovin or let him go elsewhere if a move is made for Rushworth.
