Liverpool are reportedly keen to beat Manchester United in the race to sign Nottingham Forest star Elliot Anderson The times.
After becoming the Reds manager ahead of last season, Arne Slot prioritized the signing of a new midfielder and wanted to sign Martin Zubimendi from Real Sociedad.
However, the Spaniard turned down a move to Anfield and the Merseyside club made no move to pursue alternative options. Yet the Dutch boss managed to guide his team to the Premier League title last season, thanks to the impressive performances of Ryan Gravenberch and Alexis Mac Allister.
Now the duo have established themselves as one of the best midfielders in the Premier League. However, the Reds don’t have many quality backup options in the engine room.
Dominik Szoboszlai, Curtis Jones and Wataru Endo can be deployed in a double-pivot role in midfield. However, Szoboszlai is a naturally creative midfielder and Jones has had fitness problems.
Endo, on the other hand, found it difficult to play regularly under Slot. So it looks like Liverpool are considering signing a new midfielder next year.
Zubimendi decided to join Arsenal last summer and Liverpool have now started exploring alternative options. The times claim Liverpool are keen to sign Anderson as he has been impressed with his recent standout performances, and could make a concrete move next year.
Conflict
However, TEAMtalk report that Man Utd are also interested in the midfielder, while Arsenal have also shown interest in him. Therefore, the player has no shortage of potential suitors.
In fact, United believe the 23-year-old is keen to move to Old Trafford and play under Ruben Amorim. Liverpool will therefore have to do their utmost to beat their arch-rival in this race.
The youngster has four years left on his current contract and Forest value the player at around £120m. But United believe they can convince Forest to let their star man leave for around £60m.
Anderson is one of the best young midfielders in the Premier League and has established himself as an undisputed starter in Thomas Tuchel’s England national team starting XI.
Therefore, he would be a huge coup for Man Utd or Liverpool if either club were to ultimately manage to lure him away from the City Ground next year.
