Liverpool star Szoboszlai criticized for ‘disrespectful’ mistake

Liverpool player Dominik Szoboszlai has been accused of showing disrespect towards Barnsley after attempting a backheel pass in his own six-yard box.

The Hungary international struck with a stunning strike from 35 yards to open the scoring for the Reds, who doubled their lead through Jeremy Frimpong in the 36th minute of the FA Cup third round tie at Anfield.

However, the visitors pulled one back when Adam Phillips took advantage of a silly mistake from Szoboszlai; instead of clearing his lines, the midfielder tried to send the ball to goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili.

He made a mess of it, allowing the former Liverpool academy graduate to score for the Kop.

“It’s such a great feeling to see Adam score for the header. Liverpool fan, coming through the academy,” Hourihane said.

“It’s something he can look back on for the rest of his life and say he did. Not many people can say that.”

“But it was a bit disrespectful of their player, to be honest. I don’t think he does that against Chelsea or Arsenal or in a Champions League match.”

“Happy for Adam, but disrespectful from their player perspective.”

Liverpool’s financial situation could ultimately prove decisive as substitutes Florian Wirtz and Hugo Ekitike, both signed in the summer for a combined £195 million, scored late on to secure a 4-1 win and a place in the next round.

“I’m really proud. Liverpool had to put every superstar on the bench to get over the line,” said Hourihane.

“We got a little tired towards the end and conceded those third and fourth places, which I didn’t think we deserved.”

Liverpool head coach Arne Slot kept his opinion on the matter. “I have my opinions that I will certainly share with him,” he said.

“It’s not the first time, I’m talking generally, we are 2-0 up, there are no problems in the match and we concede a sloppy or an easy goal, but this stands out even for us.

“It doesn’t help to concede a goal when you’re 2-0 up. Normally when you’re 2-0 up, the other team is close to accepting their loss, especially when you have so much control over the ball.”

“But when you give away an easy goal, as we have done so many times this season, it makes a big difference in mentality for the other team. It certainly doesn’t help for us.”
