By the end of October, Transfers claimed Tottenham Hotspur defender Micky van de Ven had caught the Reds’ attention because of his ‘physique, speed and defensive awareness’, although the Europa League holders are believed to value him at €100 million.
The Dutchman was linked with a move to Anfield in the summer of 2023 before ultimately joining Spurs that year, despite fellow countryman Virgil van Dijk’s efforts to persuade the then Wolfsburg man to join Merseyside.
It is unlikely that Van de Ven will go to Liverpool anytime soon
Liverpool’s hopes of signing the 24-year-old in the near future appear slim with the defender expected to extend his contract in North London.
This was told by transfer insider Graeme Bailey TBR Football (via Caught offside): “A new deal for Van de Ven will be one of Tottenham’s priorities under Vinai Venkatesham’s reign, and discussions have been taking place since the summer.
“This goes both ways. Van de Ven is very happy at Tottenham. He has established himself brilliantly since his arrival and has now become one of the Premier League’s best, and his partnership with Cristian Romero is on par with everything in the game.”
“Romero plays a role here; his decision not to seek a transfer this summer will impact Van de Ven, who is willing to follow in his footsteps and sign, and he will be rewarded with similar terms to those of his Argentine counterpart.
“Both Spurs and Van de Ven are aware of the interest; there is no denying that. Spurs believe he is one of the best in Europe, and they recognize this with this potential new deal. Talks will accelerate this month.”

Liverpool will have to look elsewhere for centre-back recruitment
Van de Ven has been in the news in recent days for both good and bad reasons his manager Thomas Frank seemed to disapprove rather soon after Spurs’ defeat to Chelsea last weekend scored an exceptional solo goal in the 4-0 Champions League defeat of FC Copenhagen.
The 24-year-old has been remarkably productive for a defender (he has). six goals in 16 games already this season) and has recorded the fastest sprint speed in Premier League history, with a remarkable 37.38 km per hour against Brentford in January 2024.
He made his initial Transfer fee of 43 million euros for him it looks like a bargain, and it’s easy to understand why Liverpool were reportedly interested in luring him from the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, but such a move now seems highly unlikely.
Fortunately, centre-back duo Van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate have looked more confident in recent matches after facing fierce criticism for their performances during the Reds’ dreadful run of results in October.
However, we could still use reinforcements in that part of the pitch, given the Frenchman’s precarious contract situation and Giovanni Leoni’s long-term injury.
Now that Van de Ven seems unreachable, don’t expect ties with Marc Guehi to disappear anytime soon. If anything, they will get a boost as the January transfer window approaches.
