Liverpool can boast an imperious Sunderland record as Slot faces the ex-captain

Liverpool have a historically impressive record against Sunderland, but Arne Slot won’t be thinking about that when he faces his former Feyenoord captain.

Slot only left Feyenoord last summer, but has already come into contact with his ex-skipper Lutsharel Geertruida twice.

Last season the left-back played for RB Leipzig when they lost 1-0 at Anfield and he is now back on loan after being loaned out to Sunderland in the summer.

Liverpool’s historic record against Sunderland

Liverpool haven’t played Sunderland for nine years, so their performances against the Black Cats aren’t particularly relevant. However, it is quite impressive.

Liverpool have lost just one of their last 31 Anfield meetings with Sunderland, and that loss came thanks to a Gary Rowell goal in 1983.

In the following eighteen meetings on Merseyside, nine ended in a draw.

Since 1966/67, Sunderland have only found the net twice in their last 26 games at Anfield, drawing 2-2 again in 2010 and 2016.

Sunderland have scored five first-half goals this season, the joint-lowest in the division, along with Brighton and Wolves. Liverpool have six.

The Regis Le Bris team has not kept a clean sheet in the last five games. They are one of only three teams not to have scored more than twice in a Premier League match this season, along with Arsenal and Man City.

They have lost just one of their last six games, the 1-0 defeat to Fulham in their last away game.

Last Saturday they came from two goals down to win for the first time ever in the Premier League, beating Bournemouth 3-2 at the Stadium of Light.

This season’s away games saw the fewest goals scored of any game in the division – nine in total (three for Sunderland and six against).
