Liverpool boss confirms Isak’s absence after reckless tackle

Arne Slot has confirmed that Alexander Isak will miss at least ‘two months’ on Saturday after suffering a broken fibula against Tottenham.

Isak suffered the injury while scoring in Liverpool’s 2-1 win in north London. He was substituted immediately afterwards and underwent surgery on Monday.

Ahead of this weekend’s match with Wolves in the Premier League, Slot confirmed that the Swedish striker will be out until March at the earliest.

“It will be a long-term injury, lasting a few months,” Slot said at his pre-match press conference.

“It’s a big, big disappointment for him and, as a result, for us too.”

The Liverpool manager was also critical of Spurs defender Micky van de Ven, who caused Isak’s injury when he tried to block the goalscorer’s effort. Slot called the tackle ‘reckless’ and said an injury was always likely.

“This was a reckless challenge for me,” he added.

“I’ve said a lot about Xavi Simons’ tackle, which for me was completely unintentional. I don’t think you’ll ever get an injury from a tackle like that.

“Van de Ven’s tackle – if you make that tackle 10 times – I think there is a serious chance that a player will sustain a serious injury 10 times.”
