LIVE: Car flies into BART tracks along I-580 in Castro Valley, CHP says

CASTRO VALLEY, Calif. (KGO) — An unoccupied car was launched from I-580 and onto the BART track in Castro Valley on Tuesday afternoon, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Authorities say this is part of a three-vehicle crash on westbound I-580 near Eden Canyon Road.

This accident has major consequences for evening traffic. Although there are now multiple lanes open in both directions on I-580, traffic is still moving slowly in the area.

The Alameda County Fire Department says this crash also sparked a wildfire that is under control.

BART service between Castro Valley and West Dublin/Pleasanton has been halted due to the obstruction.

BART says preliminary reports suggest the unoccupied car was loaded onto the tow truck and “fell off the truck onto the tracks.”

However, CHP says it is still investigating what happened and does not know whether the car ended up on the track as a result.

Officers say they cannot confirm that the car was loaded onto the tow truck and then fell from the truck onto the BART tracks.

CHP confirmed to ABC7 News that the tow truck driver was seriously injured in the crash.
