Liam Delap is determined to succeed at Chelsea despite his dismissal against Wolverhampton Wanderers at the Molineux Stadium in the last 16 of the League Cup, according to journalist Dean Jones.
Delap joined Chelsea from Ipswich Town in the summer of 2025 and has scored just one goal in ten games.
Jones said TEAMtalk: “Delap always knew he would be making a big decision to join Chelsea as they are ruthless when it comes to the selection competition and will not carry passengers for long before looking for a replacement.
“Part of joining Chelsea was pushing the boundaries of what he can do, even at a young age.
“The problem with criticizing him for his red card is that those competitive qualities are part of the reason Chelsea signed him.
“They wanted someone young and strong with a high ceiling, but on top of that they liked Delap because he had those nasty traits in him.
“He has always shown that physicality and played with the risk of crossing the line.
“It’s hard to defend his red card because it was very stupid and I bet Chelsea will be frustrated because of the impact.
“But this is what you risk with him. It may be part of what ultimately makes him great.”
“The other side is that he is great at getting people involved in the game, he is a determined, mobile player and also has very good finishing.
‘He also has a lot of self-confidence, but you can never completely take away his feisty character.
“There is no way he will be actively looking for a move in January because he is the kind of player who is driven and determined and is likely to prove resilient as well.”
