Laver Cup: Fonseca puts the first point of Team World on the board

Team World is on the scoreboard on the 2025 Laver Cup thanks to Joao Fonseca’s 6-4, 6-3 victory over Flavio Cobolli of Team Europe on Friday evening at the Chase Center in San Francisco, California.

Although the score was simple, both sets were a bit back and forth. Cobolli led the opener 4-2 to drop four games in a row. Fonseca returned a break halfway through the second, but he replied with an immediate break-back. The Brazilian served the third rubber of the competition with a convincing hold on 5-3.

“It is a pleasure to be here for many legends of our sport,” Fonseca said during his interview on the field. “Great stadium; great audience. Thank you everyone who came to cheer. It really means a lot to play at this court, so I am very happy … My team helped me a lot to stay positive during the game. I was a bit more nervous than normal – that’s normal.”

Europe jumped to a 2-0 lead with victories by Casper Ruud and Jakub Mensik. Ruud started the weekend with a 6-4, 7-6 (4) defeat of Reilly Opelka; Mensik succeeded that result by beating Alex Michelsen 6-1, 6-7 (3), 10-8.

Mensik, 20, became the youngest player who won a match at the Laver Cup. It was a record that held Czech for no more than four hours of transfer in the next match by the 19-year-old Fonseca.
