Lauri Markkanen’s hot start is more lasting than jazz critics think

One of the biggest consolations for the Utah Jazz this season is that Lauri Markkanen doesn’t look exactly like he used to, but potentially better than ever. Markkanen is putting up a career-high of 30.4 points per game, and while that will likely decline somewhat once the sample size increases, the Jazz have every reason to believe his electric scoring will have a lasting future.

Markkanen has been on a tear offensively and is therefore considered one of the greats of jazz. The team confirmed that his scoring output made him one of the best players in both Jazz and NBA history.

It’s because the Jazz offense is focused on giving Markkanen the best possible scoring opportunities. That’s not just about putting him in ISO, but rather about catch-and-shoot capabilities, with Markkanen averaging 10 of his points, which is actually good for a third.

It has helped that some of Markkanen’s improvement has been down to good health, but also that he is now playing alongside an improved version of Keyonte George, who has been able to find him in all the right places with his improved playing skills.

In addition to him, the Jazz have NBA-ready Walter Clayton Jr., who can lead the second unit with Markkanen. Additionally, Isaiah Collier’s return should give Markkanen more opportunities to thrive when playing without the ball. It’s fair to assume that Utah has the playmaking personnel to keep opponents guessing when it comes to Markkanen’s ability to score.

Odds are Markkanen won’t finish the season with an average above 30 points, but don’t be surprised if he ends up with a career-high. The question may be whether it is all said and done in Utah.

It proves why he’s not that easy to trade

We have always said that Markkanen is not only a star, but also a unique star. There are not many seven-footers who can score like Markkanen, because he can run isos as well as get off the ball well. That he thrives within the team’s plans proves how adaptable he is, no matter what.

That’s why he’s been in so many trade scenarios, because there’s a fair argument that wherever he plays he would fit like a glove. He may not necessarily be a franchise player, but he is a game changer for any playoff team. It’s just a shame that might not be Utah this season.

Since Markkanen’s high-scoring abilities appear to be sustainable, that will likely fuel a lot of trade rumors this season if the Jazz continue to struggle. Walker Kessler’s extended absence could do just that, but that level of consistent offensive production would be difficult for any team to part with.
