Latest Liverpool injury news issued as major Isak update

Liverpool boss Arne Slot provided the latest injury news for his side, including a big update on star striker Alexander Isak, ahead of this weekend’s visit to Nottingham Forest.

The Reds travel to the City Ground this Sunday to take on the Tricky Trees, who will play their first Premier League match under new manager Vitor Pereira after replacing former Wolves head coach Sean Dyche.

Liverpool are dealing with a number of injuries ahead of the match, although they will welcome at least one player back to the ranks.

Slot confirmed that Joe Gomez is available and fit to start after coming on as a second-half substitute against Brighton in the FA Cup last Saturday. The defender was sidelined due to an injury he sustained against Bournemouth on January 24.

However, Jeremy Frimpong “will not be involved this weekend”, but Slot said “we hope he will be involved next week if all goes to plan”. The full-back suffered a groin injury against Qarabag three weeks ago.

Endo Wataru will be out “for a long time” after leaving last week’s match against Sunderland on a stretcher, with Slot adding “we don’t know exactly how long”.

Isak, meanwhile, is in the “final stages” of his recovery after taking to the training field for the first time since breaking his leg in December. The Swede still has to train with a football, but Slot expects him to be available in April.

“You know that you are in the final phase of your rehabilitation,” said the Dutchman. “The next step is of course to get started with the ball and then go into the group, but it takes a while before you are ready to play.

“It’s nice that the rehabilitation went well; compliments to him and our medical staff. Let’s not put a timetable on it, but it is clear that he will be available if everything goes according to plan this season.”

He added: “It will be around that time – late March, early April – when he will hopefully be back with the group.

“Just because you’re back in the fold doesn’t mean you’re ready to play, let alone start a game of football. He’s been out for months again and the last time he was out for months we could all see that it took a while for him to be the player we signed from Newcastle.”
