New Delhi, February 21, 2026: The Indian men’s hockey team suffered a 0-2 defeat to Spain in a closely contested match, with the Spanish side making the most of their chances while India failed to convert promising opportunities despite persistent attacking intent. Goals from Ignacio Abajo (6′) and Ignacio Cobos (36′), one in each half, proved decisive as Spain combined clinical finishing with disciplined defending to secure victory.
India started the match with a sharp, quick pass and tried to control possession early, but Spain’s counter-attack proved effective. Ignacio Abajo (6′) took advantage of such a move and neatly tapped the ball into the net, giving Spain an early lead. Unfazed by the setback, India stuck to their structure, circulating the ball quickly through the midfield and penetrating the Spanish defense with purpose. The Indian team created several promising openings and almost found an equalizer towards the end of the quarter when Abhishek fired a powerful strike but it was denied by an excellent save from Spanish goalkeeper Luis Calzado.
The second quarter saw end-to-end action, with both teams showing attacking intent and creating chances but failing to convert. Spain earned the second penalty corner of the match in the 24th minute, but Indian goalkeeper Suraj Karkera held on to make a crucial save and prevent Spain from extending their lead.
In the closing minutes of the first half, Spain exerted sustained pressure on the Indian defense, but the Indian side absorbed it well before launching quick counter-attacks of their own, including a promising circle entry that put Spain under pressure. Despite both teams pushing for a goal, neither could find the net, and Spain held a slim 1–0 lead at half-time.
Shortly after the restart, Suraj Karkera produced a brilliant save as Spain came forward aggressively, determined to extend their lead. Their pressure was eventually rewarded when Ignacio Cobos (36′) struck from close range after finding himself unmarked in the circle to double Spain’s lead. Buoyed by the goal, Spain continued to push high and earned five penalty corners towards the closing stages of the third quarter, but the Indian defense held firm with disciplined and courageous defending to deny further damage. The penultimate quarter ended with Spain taking a 2-0 lead.
Eager to stage a comeback, India started the fourth and final quarter on the lead, spending long periods in the Spanish circle and eventually earning their first penalty corner of the match, although they were unable to convert the chance. At the other end, Indian goalkeeper Honnenahalli Shashikumar Mohith made an impressive save in a one-on-one situation to prevent Spain from extending their lead. With four minutes remaining, India withdrew their goalkeeper to add an extra outfield player in search of a breakthrough, increasing pressure on the Spanish defense. However, despite their late attack, India could not find the back of the net as the match ended with Spain securing a 2-0 win.
