Late-Inning Rally leads Cincinnati Reds to a 2-1 victory on Padres-Redleg Nation

The Cincinnati Reds came closer to a play-off place with some late inning heroism in a 2-1 win over the San Diego Padres on Wednesday evening in Petco Park. The victory also marks back-to-back series wins on Play-Off-Contening Teams for the Reds.

Andrew Abbott and Padres starter Nick Pivetta were locked up tonight in the game of a pitcher. Pivetta went seven shut-out innings and only allowed four hits while he hit eight. In the meantime, Abbott recovered in a huge way of his recent heavy start. He only allowed one point over eight innings, a Fernando Tatis Jr. Solo Home Run in the 5th. He was a pitch-efficient, threw only 102 throws, while he hit six and ran two.

Abbott had to work a few jam, but maintained his calmness over them. In the bottom of the third, Jake Cronenworth led the third inning with a walk. One from later, Tatis Jr. Save a single to the middle, but Abbott was able to end Luis Arraez and Manny Machado the inning without damage. In the fourth inning, Abbott ran a lead of batter and Ramon Laureano followed with a single. However, he still came out with relatively ease that inning, helped by a nice game from Sal Stewart to get the piping runner at a bump attempt with one out and the runners in the beginning and second.

The Reds had their options for scoring Pivetta. In the third inning, the Reds got back-to-back one-out singles from Ke’bryan Hayes and Matt Mclain, but TJ Friedl stood out on a force and Noelvi Marte spread to end the inning. The Reds had another chance to bind or take the lead in the sixth when Friedl drew a lead-off Walk, but they could only manage an Austin Hays two-out single for the rest of the inning. Ramon Laureano robbed Ke’bryan Hayes from a game type Run to end the seventh inning.

The Reds, however, broke through in the eighth when Friedl reached the base via a one-out bump single Single that Padres Reliever and Cincinnati resident Kyle Hart could not fully play. After a marte-out, Padres manager Mike Shildt applied the Lefty to-Star to raise Adrian Morejon to tackle Elly de la Cruz. De la Cruz delivered an RBI Single along the first baseman to scored Friedl of the second and tie the game. Terry Francona called on Miguel Andujar for pinching for the wrestling Gavin Lux and Andujar delivered a bloop single to the left field that De la Cruz scored from the second place after he had stolen his 34th base of the season.

The Reds did not score to score some insurance runs in the 9th, although they loaded the bases with one out, but Tony Santillan was able to work through a Lead0ff Dubbel through Gavin sheets in the second half to earn the save and close the game for the Reds.

Miguel Andujar’s Pinch-hit RBI-Single in the top of the eighth that Elly de la Cruz scored from the second place and gave the Reds a 2-1 lead.

Notes worth mentioning

-Friedl’s Bunt Single In the eighth inning gives him 11 bumps hits during the season, the most in MLB.

-It was the first series victory of the Reds in San Diego since 2019.

-Zowel the Mets and the Giants lost today, so with the Reds victory, it moves them in a draw with San Francisco and two games behind New York for the last wildcard spot.
