The Montreal Canadians and Lane Hutson agreed to a new eight-year contract extension after weeks of speculation. There was some thought it could be done this weekend, but neither side said much one way or the other. They were reluctant because there was a lot of misinformation. But eventually Hutson decided it was time to put pen to paper.
NHL news: Lane Hutson expands with the Montreal Canadiens
There was considerable speculation that things escalated on Friday and Saturday evenings. However, meeting with the media on Monday after practice, prior to the home opener on Tuesday evening, Lane Hutson stated that the deal was made before the Canadiens played the Chicago Blackhawks on Saturday evening.
If TSN Hockey Insider Pierre LeBrun explained with Gino Reda about That’s Hockeyit was Hutson who orchestrated the deal with Montreal, realizing that winning and building a competitive team is the goal.

Gino Reda: “With insider Pierre LeBrun. Pierre, just days after it looked like the two sides were going to step back, take a breather, and take the negotiations out of the media, as things were getting a little tense, the Habs and Hutson’s camp got together, and they made it happen. How did it come about, Pierre?”
Pierre LeBrun: “Well, listen, I think a lot of the credit goes to the player himself, Lane Hutson, as it was described to me after this deal was announced. I mean, he wanted this done, and he had a big influence on reaching a deal between both parties.”
But you are certainly right. I mean, listen, a little over two weeks ago the Canadiens made an eight-year offer to Hutson’s camp. It was rejected at the time. It was a deal that was about $72 million in cash, but it had some deferred money involved, which would bring down the AAV. Be that as it may, it was rejected. And that led to a period where Gino, I would say, raised the temperature in these negotiations.
NHL Rumors: Are Lane Hutson and the Montreal Canadiens closer to a deal?
But again, give credit to the player here, who, I think, didn’t want this to be a year-round distraction for his team and had to leave this until next summer. His influence in making this happen was enormous. And of course, give the Habs credit, because Kent Hughes and Jeff Gorton stuck to their guns. They would not be influenced by other contracts that were out there to the extent that they were paying for something that they felt was not part of their pet culture.
They have a lot of long-term core guys signed to decent numbers now. They want to be competitive in the long run, and Lane Hutson definitely bought into what Habs management was selling there as far as helping the team be as competitive as possible in the long run.
Again, it’s the culture that GM Kent Hughes and Vice President of Hockey Operations Jeff Gorton have built that is why players take less than market value, as winning is the ultimate goal. The Montreal Canadians are well positioned for a bright future, with their core all locked up after the 2030-2031 season.
