Large boulders on the street and on the railway in VERCIA (Sondrio), with repercussions about the circulation of railway lines. No injuries but discomfort for blood circulation and interrupted line along the route between Colico and Chiavenna. But the consequences of the event also include the Chiavenna-Milan connection Porta Garibaldi that will not be made on Sunday 16 March.
Frana to VERCEY: Masses on the road and track
In the early afternoon of Sunday, March 16, the firefighters of the Sondrio Command intervened in the municipality of Vercia, in Via Al Sasso, after a landslide movement that made different boulders apart from a rocky ridge that then slid to the valley that made both on the road and on the railway line and on the railway.
The fire brigade teams are working on security operations after the event that has not caused any injuries. “At the moment, both infrastructures (road and railway) are buried to guarantee people’s safety” specifying the regional direction of the Lombardic firefighters. “The checks are still ongoing to cause damage and to complete the safety of the area”.
Interrupted line: traffic inconveniences
The consequences for rail traffic are inevitable. Lecco-Sondrio is interrupted between Colico and Chiavenna, but the consequences were also included for the Sunday connection with Milan. “Train 10199 (Chivenna 17:54 – Milan Porta Garibaldi 20:38) will not be performed today, for the intervention of the firefighters and the competent authorities after the presence of rocks along the Spoorweghoofdkwartier between the Chiavenna and Colico stations” reads in an update of the company.
Trenord, who manages regional rail transport, organizes a replacement bus service to cover the blocked area for landslide. The Carabinieri of the Chiavenna Company and RFI technicians are also present on the spot.
