LA28 unveils Paralympic competition schedule with improved format for sitting volleyball < World ParaVolley

LA28 has released the first preview of the 2028 Paralympic competition schedule. Just 1,000 days to go before Los Angeles hosts the first Paralympic Games. The event will feature 23 sports and a record 560 medal events from August 15 to 27, 2028.

Sitting volleyball in the spotlight: new expanded competition format

A major highlight for the ParaVolley community is the introduction of an expanded sitting volleyball format, developed in close collaboration with LA28 and Olympic Broadcasting Services (OBS). The new structure includes a play-in round, giving teams an additional route to reach the semi-finals and creating more high-stakes matches for spectators.

World ParaVolley President Jürgen Schrapp welcomed the update:

“We are very much looking forward to this enhanced competition format which has been developed in close collaboration with the LA28 team and OBS. It will provide all teams with even fairer chances to reach the semi-finals and even more exciting matches for our spectators.”

— Jürgen Schrapp, President, World ParaVolley

The play-in round debuts at LA28 alongside similar improvements in wheelchair rugby, reflecting LA28’s athlete-first approach and commitment to creating more meaningful match moments.

WPV will continue to share updates as preparations for LA28 continue and teams begin their journey towards Los Angeles.
