The transaction puts an end to growing speculation surrounding the Seattle Kraken forward. Several sources recently noted that trade talks had intensified, with frequent discussions between Seattle and interested teams nearing completion. Dallas may have been in the mix, as could the Toronto Maple Leafs. While nothing was initially forthcoming, the market ultimately dictated the decision and the Blue Jackets moved forward before the roster freeze.

Seattle, already last in the NHL in goals scored, faced challenges in getting another veteran forward but had limited options as the season wore on. Despite modest production this year, Marchment’s size, physical edge and playoff experience made him attractive.

In the final year of his $4.5 million cap hit deal, he also fit the profile of a chattel. Columbus is betting that Marchment’s struggles have been more situational than permanent, hoping a new environment will help him rediscover his offense. The Blue Jackets weren’t necessarily on anyone’s radar when it came to Marchment. It will be interesting to see if they look to extend the lead.
