Vincent Kompany admitted that he was surprised by the quality that could be seen from his Bayern Munich team in their pre-season-friendly against Tottenham.
Bayern illuminated a 4-0 win over Spurs in the Allianz Arena on Thursday, thanks to goals by Harry Kane, Kingsley Coman, Lennart Karl and Jonah Kusi-Asare.
The collision of the Bundesliga Champions on Thomas Frank’s side was only their second season outing for the 2025-26 season, after he had defeated Lyon 2-1 last Saturday.
Although they were so early in their preparations for the new campaign, Bayern dominated for a large part of the game against Spurs, whose next game is in the UEFA Super Cup final.
Bayern indeed registered an expected goals (XG) a total of 3.6 of their 26 shots, while they also limit traces to only six attempts, which collected an XG count of only 0.6.
The hosts played almost double the amount of passes in the last third (267 to 140), and had 57.8% owned by the ball.
Kompany’s first season in the Bayern Dugout saw him lifting the Bundesliga title, and although the Belgian was impressed by the display, he insisted that there is still a long way to go before they reached the level they reached in 2024-25.
“It is still one of our first games. The boys did well, but we have to stay calm, we still have a lot of work ahead of us,” said Kompany.
“The mental readyness is important, and we demonstrated that today. It was a bit of a surprise that the boys already produced such a performance. I had not expected that yet.
“Normally you feel that you need five or six weeks, but we only had five good sessions. For the boys to play like that, with that intensity – that was fun.
“But it’s not an end point for us. Pre-season has only just begun and we have to determine the physical requirements.”
