Arne Slot has apparently identified who will be Liverpool’s new vice captain and informed the chosen candidate, although the public and even the teammates of the player-staying.
The role is currently vacant within the first team of the Reds after the departure of Trent Alexander-Arnold to Real Madrid earlier in the summer, with the right back of England this week giving responsibility two years ago.
Virgil van Dijk remains the other members of LFC’s leadership group on the field as a skipper, with Andy Robertson, Mo Salah and Alisson Becker.
Cost Coy on Vice-Captainincy from Liverpool
Slot was asked about the vice-capincy after the 3-1 victory of Liverpool over Yokohama F. Marinos on Wednesday, in which Wataru Endo wore the bracelet for the last half hour after he came up for the number 4 of the Reds.
Said the 46-year-old (via Liverpoolfc.com): “The group doesn’t know yet. I have already spoken to the individuals, so the one who becomes vice-captain already knows. Everyone likes to have leaders in the team, and in modern football you don’t see that much anymore.
“I have the privilege that I have a few, so experienced players who are not only experienced but understand the game and be a voice in the group and during the game, so that is always very useful.”
Lock has many worthy candidates to choose from
The composition of the current leadership group would suggest that one from Robertson, Salah or Alisson Alexander-Arnold will replace as a vice-captain, but perhaps Slot can hand over the duty to someone outside that trio.
We would imagine that it would be given to someone who will probably play in most matches, so that can exclude Endo, who picks out his country, but is usually limited to replacing the appearances for Liverpool.
In terms of whom a potential candidate can be promotion to the leadership group, or even an outer scream for the vice-capincy, Dominik Szoboszlai is the current Hungary skipper, while Ibrahima Konate has worn the bracelet for France.
We should know soon enough who will be Van Dijk’s immediate substitute in that respect, but as the lock to which is referred, the Reds are in the lucky position to have many leaders on the field who are able to embrace extra responsibility within the team, and indeed the team as a whole.
That is precisely the way he would like it if Liverpool prepares to try to keep their Premier League title in 2025/26.
