Dallas Mavericks shooting guard Klay Thompson expressed confidence that the team can compete for an NBA championship as soon as Kyrie Irving returns from his torn ACL. Thompson spoke on Monday on the Mavericks’ Media Day and emphasized the impact of the return of Irving.
“Having Kyrie back is huge,” said Thompson. “We have a solid core and adding him to the mix gives us a real chance of the title.”
Irving focused on rehabilitation, avoids the return date
Irving, 33, suffered a left knee ACL -Tarrow last March. Last season he had an average of 24.7 points, 4.8 assists and 4.6 rebounds. He is a nine times All-Star and triple all-NBA selection that won a championship with the Cleveland Cavaliers in 2016.
On Media Day, Irving described his rehabilitation process, but refused to commit to a specific return date.
“I am figuring out what I can do to push myself to where I should be,” Irving said. “I felt that I was in a big rhythm before the injury. My goal is to return mentally and physically to that level. I don’t want to place a date and risk setbacks.”
Mavericks are confronted with heavy Western conference
Fanduel Sportsbook is currently mentioning Dallas 14th in NBA Championship ODDS on 40-1. The Western Conference is stacked with contenders, including the reigning champion Oklahoma City Thunder, Denver Nuggets, Los Angeles Lakers, Houston Rockets, Los Angeles Clippers, Minnesota Timberwolves and Golden State Warriors.
Despite the opportunities, Dallas has important talent. The selection consists of star Big Man Anthony Davis, Top Rooker Cooper Flagg, Thompson, Dereck Lively II and PJ Washington. As soon as Irving returns, the line-up of the Mavericks gets another All-Star-Kaliber player, making them a strong play-off competition.
Seasonal opener and prospects
The Mavericks open their season on October 22 against the San Antonio Spurs. Although a championship run remains challenging, the team builds up in the direction of deep play -off position. With the final return of Irving and the mix of experienced veterans and young talent, Dallas wants to make a statement in the Western Conference.
“We are ready for the season,” said Thompson. “It’s about taking one game at the same time and being detailed. We have the chance to compete with someone as soon as Kyrie is back.”
