Since Keegan Bradley was called the Captain of Ryder Cup, his questions about whether he would choose himself to be in the Bethpage Black team. When Bradley won the Travelers Championship in June, it seemed a foregone conclusion that he would be the first play captain since Arnold Palmer in 1963.
This week, the dilemma of Bradley was paramount in the conversation at the BMW Championsshp 2025 at Caves Valley Golf Club in Owings Mills, MD.
Patrick Cantlay, who will probably be one of the six captain of Bradley, gave the nod to Bradley to pick himself. Rickie Fowler, who will almost certainly not be a choice, did the same. Scottie Scheffler put the question to the captain. Rory Mcilroy, who will be looking to support his promise that Europe will win on American soil, said there is no doubt that Bradley is “one of the 12 best” Americans. That is potentially a little gamesmanship of the five -fold big winner, who would like to see Team USA to navigate a play captain, but it is also true. Bradley is currently in 12th place in the World Golf Rankings and the 20th in Datagolf. He is one of the 12 best Americans on every list.

While Bradley’s mystery was the conversation of the pre-tournament events in Caves Valley, there was something more important between the flurry of Ryder Cup questions that were hurled towards the likely participants.
When the American team has struggled, usually on European soil, it led to criticism from the captain – be in Jim Fury Fury of Tom Watson of Zach Johnson – and how they have treated a team full of stars who are used to doing their own thing, how they want to do it and never extend outside their own bubble. Although the European team has found cohesion thanks to captains who have created a culture that has connected the team together, the Americans are often distributed or incoherent as rumors about irritations with meetings, dinners and clothing that follow them in Europe after losing.
Bradley, 39, was a unique choice for Captain Team USA. He is still a very competitive player, not a aging lion whose winning days are in the past. He not only plays a handful of events on exemptions to get to know potential choices, but is on the Tour week in and Week out. He is around the pillars of his team every week.
There is a potential advantage while Bradley makes his team.
Against Scheffler it has been refreshing to have a captain in Bradley who is one of them, and his leadership style and motivation tactics have left an impression on the world no. 1. According to Scheffler, the feeling is different with Bradley than with others in recent years.
“The intensity he brought as a captain – I mean, he certainly exceeded my expectations as a captain. He did great,” Scheffler said on Wednesday. “He is passionate about the Ryder Cup. He gives us a lot about us as players. It has been very nice to see him develop in this role, and we are pleased to start the Ryder Cup.
“Every now and then he leaves a few messages in our safe, many text messages,” Scheffler said when he was asked how Bradley lifted the bar as a captain. “I just feel that Keegan is a lot here versus some of the other captains we have had in the past – not that they have done it badly. It is different to have him here for week and week out. He is a man we know well. To be a kind of part of our lives.
Bradley, who has not been in a Ryder Cup team since 2014, admitted on Wednesday that he was ‘closed’ earlier in his career. He enjoyed getting to know the boys on tour better in recent years, which has benefited him, both as a player and as a captain.
While he has immersed himself in his role as a captain, Bradley has sought advice from coaches in other sports and golf. He noted that he spoke with Tiger Woods, who was a play captain at the Presidents Cup, but he also spoke with coaches who have to collect teams from All-Stars and let them come together quickly and play for a common goal.
“I really leaned more about the national team coaches where these teams come together quickly and they are super star patients and they are used to being a top dog wherever they go,” said Bradley. “I really think that is a bit more applicable than – we have no rolling players in our team. There is no man who only gets rebounds or just plays defense. Every man in our team is one of the best players in the world to compete to win Majors and tries to win tournaments every week.”
On the 2025 US Open, Bradley posted a photo in the locker of each potential player with a photo of the US Ryder Cup bag with the name of the player on it and a message with the text: “Bring your ego.” That was a trick that Bradley learned from the former New England Patriots coach Bill Belichick, and it helped to push JJ Spaun to a US Open victory that helped him to lock up a place on the team.
All this is proof of a different kind of captain for Team USA. They focused on understanding what drives each team member, how you can get the best out of it and, especially, how they can quickly let them come together as a team.
What Bradley did in his year-plus as a captain, immerses himself in the work in a way that has become common for European leaders who have created a culture of togetherness that has overstrained generations. Where Team Europe has often been larger than the sum of its parts, the American star-loading team is often seen as 12 people who drive high in Home-Soil routes but fraying over the Atlantic Ocean.
While the Americans will benefit from playing this Ryder Cup on Long Island, Bradley’s understanding and the connection with his team can become invaluable when the pressure rises at the end of September.
“For me I treat the Ryder Cup as a real team,” said Bradley. “We don’t go past Ryder Cups or what they did. I try to pretend this is a team that plays all year round.
“I think an advantage that I have as a captain is that I am close to the boys. I am in the practical rounds with the boys, in dressing rooms, waiting in rain retrisions. I saw JJ Spaun open in this rain delay, and I look at him, and I like it – it seemed to be able to win it in this position. The boys, it really forced me to really get to know them.
Bradley has a big decision to make about his own Ryder Cup that plays a future. But as a captain, he has ‘exceeded expectations’ so far, and it is an advantage that could be crucial for the Americans if they try to serve for what promises to be a rabid and raw New York home audience.
