The NBA is investigating the Los Angeles Clippers for potential salary-cap violations with regard to the approval contract of $ 28 million from Kawhi Leonard with former aspiration of the team sponsor. “A bizarre song,” said another player agent. “Usually they are deals for somewhere between $ 500,000 and $ 1 million, depending on the size of the company, the market, etc. And you can almost always see their work.”
Industrial sources describe the deal of Leonard as unprecedented in size and structure. Most NBA player sponsor notes vary between $ 500,000 and $ 1 million a year, according to several players agents interviewed by the Athletic.
NBA collective negotiating rules prohibit teams to use business partners to circumvent salary caps if players’ contracts are larger than “real market value of services to be provided”.
The competition continues to investigate whether the clippers have violated the regulations of the salary caps by the unusual aspiration scheme.
The athletics could not find any other financial relationship between a team and a main sponsor in which ownership also invested millions in the sponsor.
