Kamaru Usman and Belal Muhammad have a well-documented public feud with each other, but the former doesn’t seem to see the value in competing with the latter, at least at the moment. During a Q&A event during fight week leading up to UFC 321 this weekend, Usman was a featured fighter answering questions from several MMA enthusiasts.
Video footage of that question-and-answer session was used by the X account @ChampRDS, with a clip posted from when a fan asked Usman about his rivalry with Belal Muhammad. When the fan mentioned the back and forth that happened between the two former welterweight champions, and when asked why they aren’t competing in the octagon together now, Usman said:
“Well, we haven’t had much back and forth. It just came from him a lot. I just think he’s a dork and you know, what you do with a dork is ignore them. I like that question. This is the case for someone like me and Belal Muhammad. Right now Belal Muhammad is in first place in the division, and I’m below him. I look at the title. I’ve been where he hasn’t been. Yeah, of course he’s the been a champion. but we I saw what happened when it was time to defend you.’
Kamaru Usman: “I have nothing to gain from fighting Belal Muhammad”
Further explaining his reasoning as to why a fight with Belal Muhammad doesn’t quite make sense for him right now, Kamaru Usman continued:
“I have nothing to gain from fighting Belal Muhammad. He has everything to gain from me. That’s why he’s drafting me. He has everything to gain from me. I’m not here to waste time. I want to get the title, and I want to continue defending it and become champion again. Why waste time with him? If I have the title and he’s next, I’d happily kick his head in.”
The sentiment is clearly mutual, as Mohammed has not been silent about his feelings for Usman when asked about the former 170-pound kingpin of the United States. UFC.
