Justin Gaethje discusses possible options if Ilia Topuria moves up to welterweight

Justin Gaethje has given his thoughts on the most likely matchups and positives for him if Ilia Topuria moves up to welterweight.

Gaethje will next face Paddy Pimblett at UFC 324, with the interim 155-pound championship up for grabs. The winner of this fight will fight Topuria when he returns from his break.

Justin Gaethje recently discussed the positives of Topuria moving up to the 170-pound division for a third belt. The Highlight says he will be the UFC 155-pound champion when ‘El Matador’ leaves, after which he will attempt to regain it with Charles Oliveira and also face Max Holloway in a rematch for the BMF title. He told Submission Radio:

“If Ilia were to rise, I would just be champion. I think what that leaves open is the opportunity for me to get a rematch against Holloway or Oliveira, get my title and the BMF title.

Oliveira and Holloway do also planned to bring it back at UFC 326, with the latter’s BMF title on the line.

Charles Oliveira has similar feelings to Justin Gaethje

Charles Oliveira said in a recent interview that if he gets a statement win against Max Holloway in their rematch, he thinks he should get another shot at undisputed lightweight gold. He told AG Fight:

“If it’s a great fight and I win, I think I’ll burst the bubble and I’ll be next in line for the title again.”

The former UFC lightweight champion fought for the vacant title earlier this year at UFC 317 vs. Ilia Topuria and was knocked out cold in round 1. But ‘do Bronxs’ bounced back in October, when he scored a submission victory over Mateusz Gamrot.

The Brazilian is ranked No. 2 in the lightweight rankings, just behind Arman Tsarukyan, and a win against Holloway could put him next in line for a title shot later next year after Topuria and the winner of the UFC 324 headliner unify the titles.

Fans will also hope to see what the promotion has in store for Tsarukyan and if he gets a title shot next year. On the other hand, a win for Holloway at UFC 326 could earn him a rematch with champion Ilia Topuria. Holloway had previously expressed his desire to bring it back with Topuria at 155 pounds.
