Jude Bellingham is approaching Real Madrid’s return, says Xabi Alonso

Xabi Alonso, Real Madrid’s head coach, is hopeful that Jude Bellingham can stand in line for an early return to action after a shoulder operation.

The midfielder of England went under the knife after the run of Madrid to the semi -final of the Club World Cup this summer.

At the moment it was expected that Bellingham would be out until October, but Alonso said that the player made encouraging progress and could return earlier.

“I want to be a bit optimistic and hope he can be back for October,” said the Spaniard, who brings his new side to Real Sociedad on Saturday. “He starts to do some things with the group. He does partial training, without contact because we protect him.

“Jude makes a great effort in his recovery, although he will not be with the team [in San Sebastián]. Let’s see if he can take steps forward next week and if we have a good feeling, we wait for him. ‘

How Jude Bellingham disrupted his shoulder

Bellingham managed the injury on his left shoulder since November 2023, when he disrupted the joint in a league match against Rayo Vallecano. The problem became recurring and, after having played pain for more than a year and a half, the 22-year-old was operated in London in July.

The midfielder, who made a relocation of £ 88.5 million from Real Madrid to Borussia Dortmund two summers ago, sustained the injury after he fell forward while sliding to meet a low ball on his chest. In the first instance, a decision was made to prevent surgery and he played with a shoulder brace. But by the time Club World Cup came, it was clear that his patience was thin.

“It’s a long time ago”

“I have to be at the point where the pain is not so bad, it is more tired of having to pull the brace and to pull it, and it always rearries,” Bellingham said recorders in the United States.

“It is clear that it is very difficult in the heat, I lose so much weight and sweat[ing].

“It’s a long time ago, but I think I came to the brace at the end of my patience … I am now where I am ready to have a free shoulder and a free body.”

Real Madrid is currently at the top of La Liga, free from Athletic Bilbao on target difference after taking maximum points of their first three three games.

With his team undamaged after the international break, Alonso is hopeful that the club can continue to win vein at Real Sociedad, before organizing Marseille in the Champions League next week.

“The most important thing is that everyone has returned healthy, that we have not had any injury problems,” said the Spaniard prior to the trip to the Anoeta Stadium. “It will be demanding, every match is very important, both in La Liga and in the Champions League, and these points can be decisive in the long term.”
