José Caballero smiled and no longer needed a translator for this answer.
“I was winning today,” said Caballero.
He started the day on the losing side.
He ended on the winning side.
The failed term of office of Oswald Peraza is over.
But the Yankees replaced him with a new utility man – from the opponent – in Caballero.
They exhausted Peraza to the angels just before the deadline on Thursday in exchange for Outfield -Prast Wilberon de Pena and international money.
Then they brought the fast Caballero of the rays within Die de Yankees on Thursday afternoon defeated 7-4 in the Bronx-Voor Outfield Prospect Everson Pereira and a player who is later called.
Caballero, who said he grew up a Yankee fan, could be seen by hugging teammates in the Rays Dugout after they have been taken out of the game and learned the news.
His home traffic on his new team could not have been easier and only had to go from the visit to the clubhouse of the home team in Yankee Stadium.
“Everything happened so quickly,” said Caballero through translator Marlon Abbreu. “You have to pick up and move, change teams and now you have to give your best and hopefully bring a championship to this city.
“I like to play the game hard. I like to compete. I like to give everything I have. I love winning.”
Peraza, still only 25, had been one of the best prospects of the Yankees in recent years – no. 2 in 2022 and no. 3 in 2023, per MLB pipeline – but has struggled powerful in the Majors. Now he gets a chance to save his career on the west coast.
After the Yankees DFA’d DJ Lemahieu earlier this month, Peraza got a series of start on third base with a chance to win the job.
But he had a brutal production on the record and made various mistakes in the field, so he did nothing to prove that he can be a long -term answer to the position.
And the decision of the Yankees to acquire the third Honkman Ryan McMahon from the Rockies meant that the role of Peraza had been reduced again.
“I will be grateful to the Yankees organization for always giving an opportunity to start my career,” Peraza said through the translator. “That is just grateful. It’s a bit difficult, my energy level may be a bit low now, but everything happens for a reason and I keep going.”
Caballero fills the Back -Up Shortstop and Third Honkman Leegte left through the departure of Peraza, but he has a lot of defensive versatility.
In addition to those two positions, he played all three outfield spots together with second base.
He entered an MLB-High 34 Steals on Thursday and led the American League with 44 last year.
This year he has a .226/.311/.331 Slash line with a .638 Ops.
“With José Caballero we have a nice athletic infielder who can defend and squeeze at a high level,” said Managing Director Brian Cashman. “So that’s a nice weapon.”
Cashman insisted that the addition of Caballero was not related to the recent defensive struggles of Shortstop Anthony Volpe – who defended the organization everywhere for a long time – and was more about improving the versatility, depth and speed of the bank’s Yankees.
Caballero also has leftover Minor League options, giving the Yankees a greater grid flexibility than with Peraza (which no longer had any options).
