Boston-de Yankees received a home run and a great run-saving defensive game from their short stop in the 6-4 loss on Sunday before the Red Sox in Fenway Park.
It was another example of what José Caballero can do when they get the chance to play regularly, even in short.
Caballero started his fifth consecutive game there, the first time that the Utility player played so much this season, with Anthony Volpe still to do with the after effects of the Cortisone shot on his left shoulder because of the small Labrum tear that he initially suffered in May.
While the Yankees go into the stretch run, with the late season on the horizon, their plan at ShortStop remains unclear.
Prior to Sunday’s game, manager Aaron Boone said that he expected that full would be available to the bank. He would not commit himself to playing the collapse full Monday in Minnesota and added that it would be a daily choice between the two.
“We will do what is best every day,” said Boone.
From what Caballero recently shown, it is difficult to believe that he is currently their best option.
He added to the Red Sox on both sides of the ball on both sides of the ball, with a long Homer from left -handed Steven Matz in the seventh and then a great diving game of him to save a run on a hard grounder on a hard grounder by Ceddanne Rafaela to end the bottom of the eighth.
Caballero made a strong throw to first complete the game.
And with Volpe compromised by the injury, the Yankees are more willing to use Caballero, obtained from the rays in the Handelsdeadline, short, where he is considered above average for defense.
Caballero said that the consistent playing time ‘helps a lot’, but when he was asked what he thought he briefly shown in the defense last week, he said: “I try to help the team. It doesn’t matter what I do. As long as we keep winning games, I will be happy.”
This from a player who did not start the first two-plus weeks for the Yankees that he was in the team, because Volpe remained in the daily line-up, even though he was physically compromised and dropped in all aspects of the game.
They finally had no choice after Volpe worsened the injury and he was the last two games against Detroit and was out of the line -up for all three games against the Red Sox in Fenway Park.
The performance of Caballero made that decision easier because it is 6-out-18 with two doubles and a Homer that fills in for Volpe.
And the Yankees mainly enjoyed what they have seen from him on defense.
“He has been good,” Boone said about Caballero’s game. “In general, in the year, when you add tampa [Bay] And here he is really good outside of it. ”
Boone noticed “a few mistakes with us” and pointed to Caballero’s messy footwork during a throw error while trying to make a double game in Friday’s victory.
But even then the manager praised the 29-year-old, who played the second base, third and short in the Infield and both Corner Outfield spots in his month-plus as a Yankee.
He has looked smoothly, especially in the inner field, and Boone said that the mistakes are something that they might have to live with.
“Part of it is that he plays the game so ease,” said Boone. “[He plays] With real confidence and sometimes he keeps moving his feet. But you don’t want to take away the confidence with which he plays the game and the fearlessness with which he plays [it]. ”
Yet the fact that the Yankees are so close to the late season and try to find out their short stop situation, far from ideal.
Volpe overcame a rough regular season last year and was one of their most consistent and productive players in the play -offs.
Now they might be flexible there.
In 2022 they came to the Alcs with Isiah Kiner-Falefa, Oswaldo Cabrera and Oswald Peraza Split time short, which was a problem that they believed they had solved when Volpe was the opening day the next season.
