BMF champion Max Holloway raised eyebrows in recent comments he made about the history of the belt he holds.
Holloway, who returns at UFC 326 later this year, recently called the BMF title a “joke” before winning it. This appeared to be an open shot at Justin Gaethje and Jorge Masvidal, who held the title before his last-second knockout at UFC 300.
Masvidal, the first BMF champion, was not happy with Holloway’s assessment.
Jorge Masvidal: ‘It wouldn’t be Max’s best night’ in a possible fight
In a recent interview on The Ariel Helwani ShowMasvidal responded to Holloway’s comments.
“I like Max as a fighter, that’s his opinion, and it’s an opinion,” Masvidal said of Holloway.
“I think he’s one of the best to ever do it. He’s a dog going in there. But whether it was me or Nate fighting Max, it wouldn’t be his best night either. The skill level is definitely there… I’d like to fight Max, just as a stylistic matchup. I think he’s a great stand-up fighter, I just think I’m better. I don’t know what he means by ‘laughing stock’…
Masvidal was then asked if he took offense to Holloway’s assessment.
“Yes, I think, because I fought for it first. But at the same time, I don’t take offense to it. He’s had both belts, so… he can go ‘I don’t need the other belt,'” Masvidal replied.
“But now he’s fought for the belt, he loves the belt, and that’s what he parades around town in most of the time. So it’s funny.”
Holloway returns at UFC 326 to face Charles Oliveira in his upcoming BMF title defense. Meanwhile, Masvidal recently teased a possible White House fight, reportedly against Conor McGregor.
