Jonny Stewart explains he has joined the ‘Mile High Magpies’ for the best day of his life

Jonny Stewart is a bass singer, vocal arranger and producer based in London. He is also a huge Newcastle United fan.

Quite literally, because with his height of 1.80 meters he is only a few centimeters shorter than Big Dan Burn.

Despite not being born and raised in Tyneside, Jonny Stewart has supported Newcastle United since he was a child.

In a previous interview he explained why, despite growing up in the south, he has become a lifelong United fan; “A friend of my parents was involved in the building of the Redheugh Bridge in the early 1980s and lived in Newcastle; one of my best friends in primary school was a Toon fan.”

Decades later he cried when Newcastle United won the Carabao Cup nine months ago.

Jonny Stewart is the bass singer with the sea shanty folk supergroup The Wellermen and is also a fan of Newcastle United.

Now he has told it BBC Sports about how he had his best Newcastle United day ever, in the company of the Mile High Magpies.

Jonny Stewart explains this in mid-March 2025; “We were on tour in Colorado at the time, we had just done a show in Boulder and we had one in Denver the next day… I was frantically googling where I could watch the game (Carabao Cup final) when we got to the finals, and if I could find someone to watch it with me because on Mountain Time it started around 10am.”

The lifelong Newcastle United fan who finds the perfect alternative to his usual routine when back in Britain; “I got in touch with the Mile High Magpies, the Denver supporters’ club, and they said I should come along to this bar. There were a few Liverpool fans there, but there were over a hundred Newcastle fans in there, it was great.”

Of course, none of us will ever forget Big Dan Burn’s header on March 16, 2025.

Jonny Stewart one of many…; “I had bought a Dan Burn Carabao Cup final shirt in the build-up to the match because I thought if we win it would mean so much to have the ultimate local boy on the back of my jersey. So when Big Dan scored one of the best headers I have ever seen to put us 1-0 up, I cried so hard.”

Haven’t we all done that? The talented musician who declares; “It was hard being away from home and away from my best friend Angus, who I normally watched our games with. He was Facetiming me from this pub in Chelmsford, with about two people there, so I found a much better place.”

Does it get any better than this?

After all these years.

To see Newcastle United finally win something felt…indescribable.

Jonny Stewart sums up that moment; “And then I watched us completely beat the best team in the league and end our trophy drought. It really doesn’t get much better than that.”

Now we’ve found ourselves in yet another semi-final, with Eddie Howe just one step away from sending us to a third cup final in four years. Sensational!

None of us will ever forget March 16, 2025, as it was, for the most part, the first time we saw Newcastle United lift a trophy.

If I were to repeat that experience just a year and six days later, how special would it feel?
