Early promise and limited opportunities
Jonathan Kuminga entered the NBA in 2021 as the seventh general choice by the Golden State Warriors. He was seen as an athletic attacker with two-way potential. As Rookie, Kuminga had on average only 17 minutes per match on a championship schedule, which was limited but not unexpected. His role grew somewhat in his second year, but consistent opportunities remained elusive.
Impact of the arrival of Jimmy Butler
Kuminga showed flash of productivity in his third season. The acquisition by the Warriors of Jimmy Butleralaled his process. Before Butler’s return of an injury, Kuminga had played a role. After Butler came to the rotation again, Kuminga saw fewer opportunities on the field. The overlap in their skills created complications. Both players rely on cutting and peripheral attacks, but neither is known as a reliable perimeter shot. In today’s NBA, the distance problems arise when two non-shooters share the wing.
Executive sees Paul George parallel
An anonymous NBA director recently compared Kuminga’s current challenge with the early years of Paul George in Indiana.
“A man who was placed in a similar situation is Paul George when he arrived in Indiana,” said the executive power NBC Sports Bay Area. “When he arrived there, they were immediately at the Cusp. Danny Granger played for him, and Lance Stephenson was there. And in the end he was able to play with that David West group; they compete for championships.”
George eventually became all-Star nine times and is now at the Philadelphia 76ers. The parallel is in the early blocked by experienced players, although George became a starter in his second year, while Kuminga is going his fifth season.

What is Kuminga now?
Kuminga goes to a limited free desk and questions about his long -term fit in Golden State remain unsolved. The negotiations suggest that both parties may be better served by a new start. Although some fans still hope that he can thrive under the Steve Kerr system, his path can only resemble George if he finds a situation that prioritizes his growth.
