Jon Jones changes course by criticizing Khabib Nurmagomedov’s retirement after ‘sensible’ approach | BJPenn.com

Jon Jones gave credit to Khabib Nurmagomedov for previous comments about his abrupt retirement.

UFC Hall of Famer Khabib Nurmagomedov shook up MMA when he announced his retirement from the sport following a win over Justin Gaethje at UFC 254. Months removed from the tragic death of his father, Nurmagomedov opted to hang up the gloves despite being pound-for-pound the best and only scratching the surface of his long-term earnings potential.

Only a handful of fighters, including Jon Jones and Kamaru Usman, have achieved success in their late 30s. Nurmagomedov retired in the prime of his career but has made the transition to coaching well.

Nurmagomedov’s protégé Islam Makhachev is quickly approaching the age of 35 as he begins his new UFC welterweight title. Despite Makhachev’s recent success, that hasn’t stopped Nurmagomedov from remaining steadfast in what he believes.

Jon Jones praises Khabib Nurmagomedov’s stance on fighting over 35

In a video shared by UshataykaNurmagomedov explained why he believes fighters should not fight over the age of 35.

“When you turn 35, you have to stop doing this because [you should] leave this sport to young boys,” Nurmagomedov began.

“When you turn 35 and don’t finish [fighters]someone is going to kill you. Why? It’s better to wrap up. After age 35 you will never be the same again. People can talk whatever they want when you’re past your prime, you [are] I’m only going to fight for money

Nurmagomedov and Jones have exchanged subtle banter in recent years, including Jones pulling Nurmagomedov out of the UFC GOAT debate due to his early retirement. Nurmagomedov publicly stated that he refuses to be friendly with Jones due to Jones’ hostile past with Daniel Cormier.

But Nurmagomedov’s stance on retirement caught Jones’ attention as he plans for his Octagon return next year. He praised Nurmagomedov’s comments in a recent publication Instagram story post.

“Wise words from the champion, make your money and don’t be afraid to diversify.”
