The very mischievous John Safran returns to help judge the next wave of doco filmmakers flying around the world.
John Safran will return Race around the worldthis time as a judge for the 2026 season on ABC.
Safran rose to fame during the 1997 first season on ABC, as one of the young budding documentary filmmakers who went around the world armed with camcorders and sent back short films to be judged by a panel.
“There were eight of us and we all went to ten countries. But we were all in different countries at different times. And then we had to send back a four-minute documentary,” Safran said recently. Television tonight.
His most outrageous stunt of the series took place in Israel, where he ran naked through the streets wearing a St Kilda Football Club scarf and cap.
“I was definitely a smart kid, especially at that time, because everything was serious, but in my opinion in a slightly condescending way,” he continues.
“I looked into using the power of prayer to see if I could influence the outcome of a football match in Israel and things like that.”
In 2026 he will return as one of the jury members who judge the next generation of doco filmmakers.
His advice for the next participants?
“Well, you’re going to sign a form that says you’re going to sign a form and you’re not going to surf and stuff like that. But do you want to win, or do you want to win?” he joked during the ABC Showcase.
