He won the team for the first time since March 2021, because his constant elbow and back injuries had forced him to miss many games and had completely kept him out of the English test setup.
Archer proved his fitness in a first -class match for Sussex in the County Championship against Durham, where he grabbed 18 overs bow and one wicket.
Jofra Archer was held on the bench for the Edgbaston test even though he was in the team and was eventually unleashed in the Lord’s test. He returned with figures of 2/52 and 3/55 in the high-voltage match against India that England won in a stunning way.
Archer was retained in the Playing XI for the fourth test match in Old Trafford in Manchester, where he won three wickets for 73 points in the first innings and one wicket for 78 runs in the second innings.
I think Gus Atkinson should play – Stuart Broad
Speaking prior to the fifth test match, Stuart Broad said that England should record Gus Atkinson in the Playing XI together with Josh Tongue for the Oval test and rest rests to Brydon Carse, who “absolutely everything”, as well as Jofra Archer.

“I think Gus Atkinson should play. I know he didn’t have a workload, but we have to see him. He has not really been challenged against opposition at the highest level in test cricket. [Brydon] Carse looked in the fourth test. He has been a sadness and has given absolutely everything, but it seems that his legs have left him for this series, so Atkinson gets the nod, “said Broad as quoted from Sky Sports
“[Josh] Tong started with the series and I know that he mainly received players of lower order, but you probably have a natural replacement for Archer. “
We can’t have Archer for four years – Stuart Broad
Stuart Broad further said that pushing Jofra Archer to play three back-to-back games on his return is not ideal, and the tears must be quickly protected with the ashes in mind. He explained:
“We can’t have Archer for four years, bring him back and then bring him to the ground and don’t see him for four years. This is a big test, but the ashes too.
Nasser Hussain was on the same page as Stuart Broad and stated that Gus Atkinson should play against India in his home country in London, and Jofra Archer should be kept outside the playing XI.
“I don’t think you can let Archer play three on the Buiter who comes back after four years. Gus Atkinson comes back after a long time and then stops with a lump like three of your four seaters – but I would certainly play Atkinson in his home country as Fit,” said Nasser Hussain.
