Joe Gomez was close to leaving Liverpool on deadline day but the deal to sign Marc Guehi fell through – but the No. 2 is still attracting suitors for January.
Gomez received offers from both Brighton and Crystal Palace at the end of the summer transfer window, but his most likely move appeared to be AC Milan.
The Italian side had hoped to secure a £13million deal for the 28-year-old on deadline day, although his future hinged on the arrival of Guehi from Palace.
Ultimately, Palace postponed the deal until the final hours before pulling out completely, leaving Gomez in limbo regardless of that late decision.
According to Corriere dello SportMilan are still harboring hopes of signing the Englishman in January, although their pursuit will depend on Arne Slot’s plans.
Liverpool will be without Giovanni Leoni for the rest of the season, meaning Slot’s only specialist centre-backs are Gomez, Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate.
Konate himself is currently struggling with his fitness, which could see Gomez and Van Dijk reunited at centre-back for the visit of Man United on October 19.
And unless a new centre-back is signed in January, it seems unlikely Liverpool would consider a move for their longest-serving player.
Yet Milan were able to test their and Gomez’s resolve, with the defender clearly open to leaving before the window closed.
Sporting director Igli Tare and CEO Giorgio Furlani are expected to be in touch in the coming months to discuss a possible deal before a decision is made.
Liverpool’s centre-back plans
Gomez had also considered a move to Newcastle on the eve of Slot’s first season, with it understood he is no longer considered a first-choice starter.
Liverpool have acquired a stake in Bayern Munich’s Dayot Upamecano, along with Dortmund’s Nico Schlotterbeck and Sporting CP duo Zeno Debast and Ousmane Diomande.
But it is claimed the club have no plans to sign another centre-back in January despite losing Leoni until the end of 2026.
Guehi is likely to remain their top candidate with the prospect of a free transfer in the summer as Liverpool know he has already committed to join.
