With NBA Media and Training Camp that takes place tomorrow, the hype around the 2025-26 season for the New Orleans Pelicans has never been higher. With his first low season that was in charge of the Pelicans who came to an end, Joe Dumars made some comments that fans of Pelicans should be enthusiastic about during his press conference for the preseason.
One of the most important storylines that will enter next season is the potential concerns about Trey Murphy III and Herb Jones, both of which had demolished their seasons due to an injury in 2024-25. Fortunately, Joe Dumars gave an extremely positive update about both talented wings for Pelican fans.
Dumars spoke about how both Jones and Murphy have been back to full game speed that led to the training camp in recent weeks.
“Those boys are scrimming non -stop for the past two to three weeks. I have seen those boys are being taken down, on the floor, everything, and so those guys are already on the field a few weeks ago and at full speed.”
Getting an update like this should be that fans feel good about the following season, just like with both Murphy III and Jones Healthy, the pelicans have a legitimate chance of being a play -off team in the west. They bring the pelicans as much as elite two -way players, and they offer a huge boost for their defense and three -point shooting, two things that this group struggled enormously last season.
The Pelicans need Jones and Murphy to stay healthy to reach their ceiling.
The health of Zion Williamson is perhaps the most crucial factor in the success of the Pelicans, but you could argue that the health of Murphy III and Jones may be just as important if not anymore. They offer the pelicans so much versatility and length on the wing and create matchup nightmares for opposite teams.
Whether Williamson will remain healthy enough this season to play 60+ games or not, it doesn’t matter if Murphy III and Jones are not staying healthy. They are the perfect players to supplement Williamson and to help him take this group to new heights because they have skills that mask his mistakes. Murphy III is an elite shooter who shot 36.7 percent of Deep last season, and Jones is by far a top 5 defender in the competition in the competition.
With both players who become a contract until 2029, the future looks extremely rosy in New Orleans if they can stay healthy. Who knows if the injury gods remain in favor of the Pelicans, they can even go to the late season.
